A regular routine of reading books which have a broad range of topics allows portfolio managers to understand the ebbs and flows of history which have led to the narrative of today’s zeitgeist.   This enhances the recognition of repeatable problems, since although technology improves... mankind’s psychology does not change.  

Typically, the speculative nature of investments advances through the three acts of:  (a) Long-term Economics, its waves, cycles, and trends, (b) Financial Fundamentals which include (i) macro, (ii) micro, and (iii) specific instrument, and (c) Correlated Market Technicals.

Books Provide Insights

It is important to understand that when compared to the increasingly fluid Internet, paper printed books’ static form is exquisitely useful in that it permits a brief interlude for the mind to consider of the facts, or fallacies as they are presented at hand.   Cognitive development created by the reading of paper books allow institutional investors to be able to make the correct investment decision and increase their profits.

I dare say that for the majority of the population history perhaps stopped in 1995 which I submit was the year that the World Wide Web began its true leap into dominating the flow of information.   Today there are almost 4.4 billion Internet users worldwide.   Go back in time and you’ll find out that in 1995, the Internet had a worldwide user base of less than 40 million people.  

There are massive amounts of what the astute consider to be mere talking points available to Internet consumers.   However, unfiltered information is unavailable to those without the wherewithal to correctly analyze what is presented to them and separate fact from fiction.   Words and images are increasingly obfuscated or amplified based on artificial functions that regard intellectual interest in the finding of facts inconsequential to the actual digital delivery systems.  

Most troubling to profit seeking portfolio managers, the ubiquitous Internet fails today’s financial researchers as via the flick of a switch... or more exact, the alteration of a line or two of an algorithmic code, a technocratic gateway corporate’s lackey programmer can shut off access to useful information.  

I suggest that with regard to market speculation, we can paraphrase Mr. Orwell:   “The most effective way to destroy annual investment fund returns is to deny and obliterate portfolio managers’ understanding of financial and economic history”.

The world of investments is a zero-sum game; there are only winners and losers at the table.   The winners control the game.
